A Giving Circle Event
The States Project has built a large part of their fundraising model on Giving Circles. To date, they have over 200 active Giving Circles including State Fair, working to build power in state legislatures.
As well as raising money, this is a great way of building community and while not all Giving Circles are the same, there are many that have increasingly been collaborating with one another, whether through shared support for a particular state, or because those Giving Circles share a commonality with one another. This was true for 8 Giving Circles under The States Project, including State Fair, whose NYC based leaders decided to create a “Supergiving Circle” they aptly named Artists for Democracy. These leaders are themselves based within the arts comprising of actors, writers and artists, and those involved in theatre, music and entertainment in varying capacities. The aim was less about providing support for one particular state, more a chance for politically minded artists to spread the word about our beloved TSP and the work we do, making a big push in fundraising as the mid terms draw ever closer. Whilst allowing for donations to the various supported states, it was also an opportunity to exercise the passion these leaders hold for this work.
We are always thinking of new, creative ways of getting people involved with our cause. What is also great about Artists for Democracy, is that it gives leaders and members a chance to exercise their passions, enthusiasm and to showcase their hard work, allowing them to build upon this community.
“It was so great how everyone got together to do this, what an amazing coalition!!”
The event was held in the Financial District and included a band, with one of the many talented leaders taking to the stage to sing, as well as interludes for speeches by Melissa Walker and Daniel Squadron.
Whether it was connecting with other leaders in person, people they had only communicated with online, or never met before, this opportunity resulted in a fun-filled evening where Giving Circles were able to share their stories and attendees new to The States Project became inspired to get involved.
“I got to speak to a bunch of people who were new to Giving Circles and were asking questions and there were great speakers and a great band and great company!! It was so cool to see so many people excited”
Two of our leaders were able to attend, reporting on how great it was to discuss this work and make an impression on others. Feedback from another GC leader noted that one of State Fair’s leaders “got personal and inspirational”. Here she is in action!

The overall result was a high energy, fun and successful evening! Check out some highlights on The States Project’s Instagram account:

Some of TSP’s artist-led Giving Circles came together for a night of inspiration, joy, and power building. And they did what they do best, serving up some Broadway-level performances, all for state legislatures!
Like they said, investing in state legislatures is the smartest, most strategic giving you’ll do this election season. Learn how you can support the work at the link in our bio!

…all about the power of state legislatures!
Meanwhile, an opportunity to donate to this coalition of giving circles has been created and can be accessed here: https://app.oath.vote/set?p=statesproject26-giving-circles
